Being or doing?  Do we call leaders “great” because of what they do, or because of who they are?  And what kind of leader is most needed now?  If we only think about leadership horizontally, we assess a leader’s effectiveness only by task or skill.  In VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous) times, though, what we really need are leaders who are developing vertically.  Is their consciousness deepening?  Is their perspective widening?  Do they truly understand the possibilities of difference?  And most importantly, are they able to apply this vertical understanding?  Are they able to practice wholeness?
